Increase in violent actions against Christian community a concern, Syro-Malabar Synod

Kakkanad : The Syro-Malabar Synod has expressed concern over the increase in violence against the Christian community across India. There is a growing tendency to search and attack Christian institutions and deny even their legitimate rights, contrary to the secular nature of the country.

The recent measures deliberately targeting the various institutions of the Missionaries of Charity Congregation founded by Mother Teresa is an act which represents such unsecular nature.

The recent atrocities against various schools and other institutions, including the Diocese of Sagar, are quite unfortunate.

The legal reforms being implemented in some states under the Prohibition of Conversion Act are detrimental to the secular character of the country. It is undemocratic for the state to unjustly interfere with a citizen's freedom to choose and believe in the religion of their choice.

The Syro-Malabar Synod called on the authorities to initiate immediate action to stop the growing atrocities against the Christian community.
