Hey Kids,

You all know why an apple falls down from the famous story 'when an apple fell on Sir Isaac Newton’s head'. It's because of a little something we all call ‘Gravity’.

Gravity is what pulls everything toward the ground including you. But have you seen what happens when an apple falls on water? Ok let’s do a practical to see...


Things needed for the experiment
• Bucket or bin to hold water
• Real apples

How to conduct the experiment

• Fill a bucket with water
• Drop the apples to the water and observe what happens.
• Did the apples SINK to the bottom of the water or FLOAT in the water?

Apples float in the water because they are less dense than the water, which means they are “Buoyant”.

Fruits contain a lot of air, even the hefty pumpkins because they are mainly hollow inside despite their size and weight.

So, based upon this principle, we can conclude that any object less dense than water will float. On the other hand, objects denser than water will sink.

Apple or pumpkins, although large, aren't very dense because they are mainly hollow inside. Given their large size, though, they displace a large amount of water.

With a mainly hollow interior, it's easy for apple or pumpkin to weigh less than the large amount of water it displaces!


This phenomenon is called Buoyancy.

The same concept is used to build ships and boats even though they are made on heavy metal like Iron they still float.
